Beam Steering and Stabilization

Industry News

The ability to steer / stabilize a laser, and keep it pointed throughout vibration and external disturbances requires the ability to move a lens/mirror with exceptional speed and response time. Hand-held devices that may experience motion from a vehicle, shaking of a hand, or vibration from a device are often required to utilize a mechanism to not only point the beam, but to stabilize on the desired target.

Laser steering utilizes an electro-mechanical solution to position a lens based on the input of an external reference such as an accelerometer or gyro. While laser steering involves moving a lens, Optical Image Stabilization can also be achieved by moving a sensor for day or thermal imaging cameras as well as other devices.

Nanomotion’s piezo motors are characterized by higher mechanical power density, fast response, and operate as a direct drive. As the response time of piezo is orders of magnitude faster than a dc motor, typically in tens of microseconds, fast beam steering is enabled. The fast response coupled with unique SWaP advantages (motor weight <0.6g, yielding 1.4N force) makes Nanomotion’s piezo motors ideal for responding to external disturbances and maintaining position location.
