Developed in 1806, Endoscopes were initial intended for investigation and confirmation (diagnosis), with a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Today, with more than 10m endoscopies performed annually, Endoscopes are useful in a wide range of medical situations, from observation/diagnosis, imaging, and minor surgical procedures.

As the use of Endoscopes continues to expand, the development of miniature actuation has led the use of motorization to provide clearer imaging, through focus and zoom functions as well as manipulators to perform specific tasks. Ultrasonic piezo motors play a key role in advancing the capabilities of this versatile medical device.

A miniature focus (or focus & zoom) module fits inside a 25mm cubic volume, providing >8mm travel and closed loop position resolution to 0.24µm.

As Endoscopes are sterilized and reused, there are current efforts to provide better image quality without changing the optical tube that is inserted into the body. This comes in the form of adding a motorized lens between the eye piece and the camera, freeing up the doctor’s hands to tend to a patient.

Utilizing Nanomotion’s family of miniature, low voltage piezo motors, small modules are designed to move a lens precisely along the optical axis. This module contains the entire closed loop axis, with motor, feedback, and servo control.

Nanomotion has developed more advanced motion solutions that are cable of driving a lens, contained in a 6mm diameter tube, yielding the ability to put motion at the tip of the endoscope.
Inside the capsulee was a focus focus module to drive a lens with a piezo motor, position sensor and drive/control chip.

In the mid-1990’s, Capsule Endoscopy was developed by putting a camera system in a capsule. The capsule travels through the digestive tract, taking thousands of pictures that transmitted to an external storage device worn on a belt. This has been extremely helpful in examining the small intestines for diagnosing Crohn’s disease.

Nanomotion leveraged its design of a cell phone focus module, reducing the size of the components, to fit into the capsule, which is about the size of a vitamin.

Today, Endoscopies (Minimally Invasive Surgery) are quite commonplace. They are quick, safe procedures with little discomfort to the patient. Through the integration of miniature motors, the functions that can be performed with an endoscope continue to expand. Nanomotion continues to work with key customers on the development of motorized modules that allow the medical community to make advances in health care.

Microscopy: The field of using a microscope to view samples or objects. In the field of microscopy, there are a wide range of types of microscopes ranging from an optical (or light) microscope, to Electron beam or Scanning Probe Microscopes. In its simplest form, a light microscope is based on passing visible light through (or reflected off) a sample, ultimately magnified by a single or multi-lens arrangement. These images can be viewed or captured digitally by camera.

While the birth of the Microscope dates back to approximately 1590, there are many claims as to who was the first inventor:

  • Zaccharias & Hans Janssen were spectacle makers and experimented with multiple lenses in a tube, increasing the magnification of objects, in the 1590’s
  • Galileo, in 1609, ultimately configured multiple lenses (convex and concave) into a tube, resulting in the Telescope and incorporating a focus device. Ultimately this was celebrated in 1624 and given the name “Microscope”.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek, often referred to as the “Father of the Microscope” ultimately used a single, strong lens to see and identify bacteria, bringing advancement to the biological community.
And others, like Robert Hooke, who took the work of others and made significant improvements, made the microscope a functional tool for discovery purposes and was credited with inventing the “English Microscope”.

Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction (absorption & emission) between matter and light, as a function of the wavelength or frequency of the radiation. It involves the splitting of light into specific wavelengths (a spectrum), done similarly to the way a prism splits light into different colors.

The measurement of this interaction, between light and matter is referred to as Spectrometry. Basically, Spectrometry is a method of studying and measuring the specific spectrum, and is widely used for analysis of materials, chemicals and gasses

Nanomotion designs and manufactures a variety of standard and OEM modules to satisfy a wide range of application requirements to optimize the performance of spectrometers. Depending on requirements, modules are configured for ground based stationary spectrometers, hand-held portable spectrometers and even flight rated devices for counter measure devices and airborne analysis.

At the core of a Fourier Transform (FTIR) Spectrometer is a Michelson interferometer that dictates the precise scanning of a mirror to collect high resolution spectral data over a wide spectral range.

These mirrors must move with precise velocity control and low angular error in order for the spectral measurement to be accurate.

Nanomotion’s motors and small FB Stages excel at satisfying the motion performance required for Michelson interfermetric based spectrometry.

  • Velocity ranges from 0.03mm/sec to 30mm/sec
  • Velocity uniformity to 0.25%
  • Angular accuracy to 10µrad over 10mm travel
  • Operating temperatures from -10°C to +50°C

OEM designs for hand-held spectrometers are supported by Nanomotion’s small modules, based on our Edge & Edge-4X motors. Modules designed as small, light weight power efficient solutions can meet the most demanding requirements.

The open cavity can range in diameter. Shown here is 18mm high with a ~20mm cavity, with the ability to operate up to 1kHz for rapid scanning.

An alternative to a Michelson interferometer based spectrometer is a Fabry-Perot interferometer. A Fabry-Perot interferometer is based on a pair of partially silvered glass optical flats that are typically spaced a few millimeters apart. This principle relies on the phenomenon of multiple beam interference that arises when light shines through a cavity bound by two reflective parallel surfaces. When the light encounters one of the surfaces, a portion of the light is transmitted out and a portion is reflected back. Piezo actuated flexures are used to maintain the parallelism.

The pair optical flats are aligned with a small travel flexure assembly, configured into a tripod with (3) piezo axes. Each axis has a capacitive sensor for feedback and travel up to 50µm

Nanomotion provides motion solutions for a broad range of spectroscopy applications, including Raman, Mass Spectroscopy, Hyperspectral, Optical and others. The ability to provide constant velocity with low angular error is an enabling capability for new generations of smaller and more precise spectrometers.

Global business drivers related to computing, data processing, and social media continue to push the semiconductor manufacturing requirements to levels never before achieved. Individual manufacturers as well as technical consortia around the world are working to develop manufacturing systems with the precision levels necessary to produce the next generation chip.

In mapping the technology gaps necessary to achieve next generation performance, there are a variety of areas that represent challenges. Specific to motion control, the precision required to yield position stability at the sub 1 nanometer level has been identified as a major requirement. It is expected that EBeam imaging resolution will require positioning stability of less than 1nm for extended time periods.

Now motion control manufactures must come to respect one nanometer.

Ultra-Precision XY Vacuum Stage

Travel to 500mm
Speed to 100mm/sec
Position Resolution to 0.1nm
Position stability of 1nm over 10 hours

How else can we help?

Achieving the required level of performance must come from a methodical and system design perspective. It is not simply a function of increasing position feedback resolution, but rather considering the impact of every component, such as materials, bearings and motors. This also requires thorough analysis for thermal and vibration impact, taking into account the operating environment.

Utilizing a system design approach, considering all component and environmental factors, Nanomotion has developed and deployed multiple modes of operation within its piezo motor & control to facilitate meeting next generation requirements.

In a single motor or axis, Nanomotion is providing long travel with velocity to 500mm/sec and sub-nanometer positioning. In addition to these modes, the ability to compensate for thermal drift and to do active vibration suppression, allows one single drive technology to close the technology gap from a motion perspective.

Nanomotion’s PS Stage incorporates the new SE motor, which provides significantly higher stiffness and efficiency, has demonstrated sub 1nm performance for meeting these application requirements. The stage can support encoder resolution below 0.1nm (down to 32pm) and provides the structural integrity to meet stable performance.

We sincerely hope this email finds you well. All of our global employees, customers, and associates have had a major impact to their lives, families and work environment due to the CoronaVirus. We are all trying to manage the balance between our family security, work and government regulations.

Nanomotion is currently operating within the guidelines that have be laid out by our respective Governments, relative to our locations, and our corporate policy. We are functioning within the best interest of our personal families and business associates. Our manufacturing continues to operate to meet customer requirements. Employees that are capable of working remotely are working from home, remaining fully connected to business operations. We have successfully mitigated the risk of material flow to meet our delivery commitments and now focus on managing our operations without putting anyone at risk. We have no reported cases of the Corona virus within the company.

How else can we help?

In addition to following government and corporate guidelines to prevent the spread of the CoronaVirus, Nanomotion is focusing much of its short term resources on the production of our RS08 and S787 NUC Shutters that are used in Infrared (IR) cameras.

As we see global actions to increase the use of IR cameras in airports, bus & train stations, border crossings and other high traffic areas, Nanomotion has prepared to increase production of our shutters, that provide an essential calibration to IR cameras.

Dating back to 2003, the SARs outbreak created the need for airports to adopt the use of IR cameras. Led by activities in Singapore, camera systems were used to identify elevated body temperature of travelers entering the country. More recently, the same technology was deployed during the Ebola crisis. Today we are seeing the deployment of IR cameras throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas, due to the massive spread of the CoronaVirus.

The use of Nanomotion’s shutter is an essential part of an IR camera to perform the NUC (non-uniformity calibration) process.

The S787 Linear shutter is designed to sit over the IR image sensor, providing an integral solution for the camera manufacturer and leveraging a close back-working distance.

The RS08 Rotary shutter is designed with all of the drive electronics inside the 8mm diameter shutter body, with the smallest, lightest and most power efficient shutter solution in the world.
