Motor Baking for Vacuum Motors for Proper Cleaning and Handling

Vacuum motors and other vacuum compatible products require special attention in design, material selection, cleaning and handling. Even with proper design and materials, issues related to cleaning and handling can easily cause a vacuum environment to become contaminated with hydrocarbons affecting motion performance of vacuum motors.

It is common practice to follow strict guidelines of material selection, related to outgassing:
TML (Total Mass Loss) of <1.0%
CVCM (Collected Volatile Condensable Material) of <0.1% (Tested to ASTM E595-93 standards for outgassing in vacuum and space)

Cleaning and bakingAdditionally, the proper cleaning, baking and packaging plays a significant role in the success of motion products working in vacuum Nanomotion has invested in significant infrastructure for cleaning and baking vacuum motors.

Vacuum ovenIn addition to our class 100 cleanroom, Nanomotion has adopted a cleaning process for all vacuum motors, as a standard practice. This cleaning process removes the vast majority of contaminants that can impact motion performance.

We have also installed a vacuum oven to offer motor baking as a purchase option. Baking a motor/system will eliminate:
  •  Water vapor
  •  Cyclohexane/Ethanol
  •  Turbo pump oil
  •  Carbon dioxide
  •  And other potential contamination

We have also published a baking procedure that defines how to handle the motor for proper baking, which is available on our website. This procedure defines the proper handling of motor leads during baking and is critical to yield proper motor performance.
