Precision Multi-Axis Stage Enables Direct Write Ink Lithograpy

In the world of Nanotechnology, the ability to ‘print’ structures such as proteins, DNA/RNA, lipids, and biopolymers in a laboratory environment is essential to addressing applications in medical device functionalization, tissue engineering and biomaterial patterning. The utilization of direct-write ink eliminates having to expose samples to harsh vacuum or UV light and allows for the creation of sub-cellular scaled features which can be deposited in a controlled and consistent manner.

Ink lithography can be used to fabricate multi-component deposition of a wide range of materials with nanoscale registry, with features from 50nm up to 10µm.
Ink Lithography Pen TipsUsing an array of ‘pen’ tips, features can be printed over a large area in a short amount of time, with a table top tool, in a normal laboratory environment.

The ability to print features down to 50nm comes from the performance capability of a multi-axis stage that operates at 5nm resolution and positions to 20nm.

Nanomotions AB2 AmplifiersThe motion system utilizes standard motion stages that is configured for Tip & Tilt at the base, along with XY and Z motion to manipulate the substrate. The substrate can be placed in any position as well as on an angle, to facilitate the appropriate location, size and shape of the deposition.

The motion system is supported with a 5 axis motion controller and Nanomotion’s AB2 amplifiers which provide operation in a normal servo mode as well as an ultra-high resolution DC mode, allowing for positioning and motion down to 1 encoder count (5nm). The AB2 supports seamless switching between the two modes for ‘coarse & fine’ motion build into the same axis.
